The look, explained
Real travertine is a limestone formed around mineral springs — famously the stone of Roman buildings — with distinctive linear banding when it’s vein-cut and cloudier swirls when cross-cut. Its palette runs ivory, beige, walnut and silver. That warmth is exactly what the current move away from grey interiors has been searching for, which is why travertine went from “dated 90s feature” to the most requested look in our showroom in the space of about two years.
Porcelain vs real travertine
We sell the look in porcelain, and there’s a reason the industry has shifted that way:
Real travertine is porous. It needs sealing on installation and periodically forever after, it can etch with acidic spills, and its natural pits fill with grime outdoors. It’s beautiful — and it’s a commitment.
Travertine look porcelain absorbs almost no water (under 0.5%), never needs sealing, shrugs off wine, sunscreen and pool chemicals, and comes in rectified large formats real stone can’t match. Italian manufacturers now print and texture the surface so convincingly that clients regularly can’t pick the porcelain from the stone sample sitting next to it.
For Queensland conditions — humidity, chlorinated pools, sunscreen-covered feet, summer storms — porcelain is simply the more sensible material for most projects.
The ranges to look at

Where the look works hardest
Bathrooms — floor-to-ceiling travertine look in a matt finish is the current spa-bathroom formula, usually with brushed nickel or aged brass tapware. Living floors — the warm neutral base suits everything from coastal to Mediterranean to contemporary schemes. Outdoors — grip-finish and 20mm versions handle alfresco areas and pool surrounds, where real travertine’s maintenance burden is highest. Feature walls — vein-cut patterns stacked vertically make a striking fireplace or entry wall.
Choosing well: three tips from our designers
First, check the number of “faces” — quality ranges print 30–60+ unique patterns so the veining doesn’t visibly repeat across a floor. Second, decide vein direction early; linear vein-cut looks are usually laid with the veining running the room’s long dimension.
