Slip ratings in plain English
You will see two numbers on outdoor tiles. The R rating comes from a ramp test: R10 suits covered outdoor areas, R11 is the everyday standard for open patios and alfresco floors, and R12 gives extra grip on steeper or frequently wet surfaces. The P rating comes from the wet pendulum test used in Australian standards: P4 is the usual benchmark for external paving and pool surrounds, and P5 is called for on ramps and steps leading into water. Porcelain is fired at extreme temperatures, so it is UV stable and will not fade through years of harsh summers. It shrugs off storms, hoses clean, and unlike natural stone it never needs sealing.

What R rating do I need for a pool surround?
As a rule of thumb, look for R11 as a minimum — many pool owners choose R12 — and a wet pendulum rating of P4 or better, moving to P5 for ramps and steps that lead into the water. Your certifier can confirm the requirement for your specific project.
Do porcelain tiles get hot in the sun?
Any hard surface heats up in full Queensland sun, and porcelain is no worse than concrete or natural stone. Lighter colours stay noticeably cooler underfoot, so around pools we usually suggest pale, textured finishes.
Do outdoor porcelain tiles need sealing?
No. Glazed porcelain is non-porous, so unlike natural stone it never needs sealing. The grout joints can benefit from a sealer, and your tiler can take care of that at installation.
