The moment everything changed
For two decades, engineered stone dominated Australian kitchens. Its prohibition — driven by the serious silicosis risk to workers fabricating it — left builders and renovators needing an alternative that could deliver the same marble looks at scale. Porcelain was ready: manufactured at slab size for years in Italy and Spain, containing minimal crystalline silica by comparison, and in several respects outperforming what it replaced. What porcelain does that stone can’t
Genuine heat resistance. Porcelain is fired above 1200°C; a hot pan straight from the burner won’t scorch it — the standout practical advantage over both engineered stone (which could scorch) and laminate.
No sealing, no staining. Near-zero porosity means turmeric, red wine and beetroot wipe off. Natural marble owners will understand what a liberation that is.
UV stability. Colours don’t fade, making porcelain the rare benchtop equally at home in an outdoor kitchen — a very Queensland consideration.
Scratch resistance. Harder than granite in everyday terms. (We’d still suggest a chopping board — mostly to protect your knives.)
Full-veined slab looks. Book-matched calacatta islands, waterfall ends, and matching splashback slabs cut from the same batch so the veining flows across the whole kitchen.
Honest limitations, because trust matters
Porcelain is extremely hard but, like all ultra-hard surfaces, less forgiving of a heavy point impact on an unsupported edge — corners and edges deserve respect during installation and in daily life. Fabrication is specialist work: cutting and mitring 12mm porcelain requires experienced hands and proper equipment, so use fabricators who work with it routinely (we can point you to them). And repairs, while possible, are more involved than laminate patch-ups — though the surface’s durability means they’re rarely needed.

Marble looks lead — warm calacatta and creamy statuario in satin finishes — followed by honed concrete and limestone looks for minimalist schemes, and dramatic dark stones for island statements. Thickness reads as style: 20mm presents a solid traditional profile; 12mm with a mitred apron delivers the chunky-yet-crisp architectural edge dominating current kitchen design.
